  • I stumbled upon this Metro by accident when I decided I wanted to make macaroni and cheese when I got home from an appointment but didn't have any of the ingredients. I tend to avoid Metro, because the few I've been to always seem dark and beaten up, but this one was bright and had a newish feel (I honestly have no idea when it opened, so for all I know, it could be new). After my initial visit, I dragged my boyfriend back for our weekly shopping trip this past Friday after work. This location is conveniently located on our route home, and seemed to have a good selection of items. This store has one of the best gluten-free/organic/allergen-friendly sections I've seen in any grocery store in downtown Toronto. They have a wide array of pastas, snack foods, baking mixes, and other hard-to-find items. Only downside? They didn't appear to have gluten-free perogies (and so my quest continues!) They also had some items that we haven't been able to readily find at other grocery stores we frequent, including curly fries and hot taco sauce (can you believe other stores only carry mild?) That being said, there were some items that we felt the store should have that were noticeably absent. Biggest standout? Maple Leaf Natural Selections bacon. Love that stuff. The worst part of the trip was definitely the check-out. Holy long lines, Batman. I worked at a grocery store in my teenage years, and we would be in BIG trouble if we ever let the lines get this way. The express line probably had 15 people in it, and even the four self check-outs had a long line of people anxiously waiting to deal with the finicky machines. We probably stood in line for 15 minutes. They definitely need to get their act together and have more cashiers for the after-work rush. They did, however, bag our groceries for us. Ever since the bag ban came into place, I hate that a majority of grocery stores won't bag your groceries for you. Most of them just ask how many bags you want and throw them at you, leaving you to balance the task of bagging, paying, and getting out of the way of the next customer. Other than the check-out nightmare, it was a good experience. It may not end up being our main go-to for grocery shopping but we'll definitely be back, if only for more curly fries.
