| - I'll get right to the point: in these days of movie ticket prices in the $12 range, Encore is a gem. New movies, $8 - $7 matinee, and a whopping $5 on Tuesdays. You should go.
The theatre itself is a former Cineplex Odeon, which opened some time around the late 80s - early 90s as I recall. I remember seeing Bambi, the live-action Jungle Book, and Men in Black here under that banner. It spent some time being used as a church, but now it's back to a celluloid temple.
Five screens, which though they aren't the biggest, definitely get the job done. The actual theatres are lower capacity than the current trend, and the seats are nice - fairly spacious, and fairly new. They remind me of lecture hall seats - but nice ones. Cup holders are in front of you, which is a nice change from the armrest. Sound is good - not sure if it's surround or not.
Concessions are one area where I've been disappointed in some theatres recently, most notably AMC Yonge and Dundas. Encore doesn't disappoint here: standard pop, popcorn, candy, nachos and slushies, but also soft pretzels, pizza, hot dogs, italian soda (!) and a variety of coffee-based beverages. They're a Pepsi shop, so Dr. Pepper, that wonderful elixir of all things good, is available. Prices are similar to, if not below, what you'd pay at the majors, I'd say - regular pop corn and Dr. Pepper set me back about $7.50 with tax.
Video games are plentiful on both sides of the ticket taker - there are more around the corner that you can't see from the concessions. Galaga is right by the concession stand. Washrooms are a bit dated, but clean.
Honestly, my biggest complaint is that there's nothing playing that I want to see / haven't seen already this Tuesday. I'm very hopeful for next Tuesday, though.
