| - A great Groupon opportunity and actually the first "staycation" for my guy and me.
Parador Inn, which was built in 1870, sits on a particularly pretty block among other beautiful old buildings. There's a lot to do nearby on the North Shore. Within about a half mile walk is Heinz Field, the Science Center and SportsWorks, Stage AE, Rivers Casino, the Andy Warhol Museum, and more. If you don't feel like trekking or if maybe the weather isn't cooperating, a taxi to/from any of these places will run just about $5. The March evening we stayed at Parador Inn we checked in around 4:30PM and were greeted by Ty and given a nice tour. We then briefly settled into the 3rd floor Oleander room and then walked to Hyde Park Steakhouse's stellar Happy Hour for food and drinks, unfortunately blew some money at Rivers Casino, and finally returned to the Inn via taxi in the evening. The next morning we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the Inn, checked out, and visited the Andy Warhol museum. Awesome time, just wish we could have stayed longer...and not lost at the casino!
Breakfast was a very nice experience and deserves its own paragraph. The breakfast options here are probably more limited than one would expect, but that's because Ed cooks for and serves his guests himself. That being said, I enjoyed everything I ate that morning. The quiche, which Ed explained he makes a little healthier than the recipe version, was the star of the show, and the poppy seed banana bread was tasty too. There were also yogurt parfaits, orange juice, hot tea, and coffee on-hand.
Ed was every bit as professional as his gracious and even-handed remarks on the Parador Inn Yelp review page would lead one to believe. Other businesses should take notice. Ask my husband, there are few things that will drive me away from an establishment faster than a business owner who leaves annoying, self-indulgent, or otherwise unnecessary and unprofessional comments on Yelp. I got the impression that Ed is a truly dedicated "innkeeper" who takes great pride in his work.
You know, I noticed some dust here and there and some glass/windows that could have been cleaner, but I don't feel the need to deduct a star. Parador Inn overall is well kept and a very special place. We plan to return, probably with another Groupon or similar great deal.
This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning RJ and old Razor, Ed's black labs. I love animals but tend to have mixed feelings about pets in the workplace, but these guys were adorable, well behaved, and limited to the back/pantry area of the first floor. Receiving a personalized email from RJ, Sr. VP of Hospitality, the evening following our departure was just too cute.
