  • Last night was my first experience at 5th and Wine and my last. The service was unforgivable. Firstly, no one came to bring us water, greet us, check on us, for quite awhile after we were seated. Finally, one of the staff members who was getting something at the wait station noticed us and asked if anyone had been with us. When we said no, all of the sudden a waiter jumps up from the table directly behind us where he was sitting and socializing with friends and starts apologizing profusely... Apparently, he was too busy hanging out that he didn't notice us sitting there waiting right next to his table... Our waiter the entire evening was distracted and rushed. We felt like we were putting him out, asking questions about the menu. My friend ordered the Red Sangria and he brought her white- and was no where to be found for such a long time, that we were unable to get it fixed. So, she went ahead and drank it. When he did come back, we brought it to his attention, which he was not apologetic at all and charged us for it. She ordered another one- the second time it was right. I ordered the halibut, which the flavor was fantastic- loved the fennel and the sauce, but the fish was very over cooked and dry. I had only taken about 2 bites and the plate was mainly full- like 90% (the portion was on the small side), when our server approached and asked how our meal was. I told him that my fish was very overcooked (which my friend tasted and concurred). I praised the flavors of the dish, but expressed my disappointment that the star of the meal was not good. He basically was like, and this is not verbatim, "Oh bummer... it's a shame when the best part isn't right". Then he just walked off. He didn't offer to have it remade- nothing. At the end of the evening, he took off one glass of wine (the least expensive that we ordered- as we ordered a couple different glasses). He said he was doing this as a favor because of my overcooked fish. So, I guess a comped $9 glass of wine makes up for an overcooked $28 entree... I feel that our server was not concerned with getting our orders right, fixing mistakes- some directly linked to his performance as well, and was more concerned with his tip potentially going down then ensuring that his customers had a pleasant experience. Also, he was much more attentive to a larger table- and we felt he was "cherry picking" customers. I spent about $115 all together for 2 people- that's with my generous $9 comp. I left a $7 tip on my credit card and paid the remainder of the servers tip in cash, which was about 18%- far less than I would have left, had I received good service and far more than my server deserved. (Just an FYI to management, in case our waiter didn't claim the cash). At the end of the day, the money was not the issue for me. Value is what is important- and don't feel that this meal was worth the cost.
