| - REASON FOR WHY THE WAIT FOR THE E.R. IS SO LONG:
Staff takes care of the more serious/life threatening cases first. Yeah, it sucks when you're sick or hurting and you have to wait. I get it, but when someone is coming from an ambulance suffering from a heart attack, yeah I would also help them first before your food poisoning/bee sting/broken bone/etc. That's my little schpeel for all these complaints of "the E.R. takes forever".
My experience is of my treatment at the Emergency Room and the General Hospital staying here for two nights.
PROS OF BANNER GATEWAY EMERGENCY ROOM:
- Little to no wait if in life threatening condition
- Waiting room is large
- Waiting room has child entertainment (TVs, toys, etc.)
GIVE OR TAKE:
- Okay reception staff
CONS OF EMERGENCY ROOM:
- If your case isn't life threatening, chance are you'll be waiting for a while
- Some of the medical staff treat you like a number
PROS OF GENERAL HOSPITAL ADMITTANCE/OVERNIGHT STAY:
- Amazing staff!
- Great food (as hospital food goes) and a ton of selection
- Room Service
- Up to date furnishing in rooms
- Full access to T.V.
- Free Wi-Fi
- Couch for guests to sleep on
- Didn't bring toiletries? They have plenty
- Warmed blankets :)
GIVE OR TAKES:
- Nurse call time varied. They arrived anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes after pressing the button
CONS:
- It took me a several hours to get discharged (go home) because we were waiting for the doctor to fill out paperwork.
I arrived at the E.R for a blood transfusion during the afternoon. It wasn't overly crowded, but there were about a dozen patients waiting to get called in. I was diagnosed as severely anemic (where I was losing enough blood that I would faint) prior to my visit and needed a blood transfusion (where they pump me up with donated blood). I was taken in immediately by the staff.
I was evaluated promptly and it took me less than ten minutes to see a doctor. I saw Dr. Bennett, and he was very friendly and had a lot of character. They tested me on the spot. I waited for my results for about a half hour before they came back and let me know that they were going to perform the transfusion and the details with that. I was also going to be admitted (staying the night) for at least a day. It was going to take a while for them to match my blood with a donor's and have them thaw the blood from the blood bank. It took about two hours for them to take me to another room to admit me, so I could begin the transfusion.
A couple members of the E.R. staff were affected with bedside manners (treating you as only a number), but I didn't have any expectations considering it is a fast paced and tense environment.
The facility is pretty new and up to date. My room had this awesome bed that would readjust itself to fit my position. It also had a HD TV, a system that would send information of your vitals (heart rate, etc.) to a separate room to be watched over by someone and if something doesn't seem right someone will turn on a camera and see if you're alright, a private bathroom, and a pullout couch for guests. There is also the nurse's call button as well. If you need a nurse, press the button, and they'll come to check on you. The time they would arrive varied. For me, it was divided between 30 seconds and ten minutes.
Rooms also had room service. The meals were very good (as hospital standards go), and had a wide selection like any restaurant would. They had anything from asparagus, grilled salmon and asparagus salad, fruits, veggies, hamburgers, pasta, salads, sandwiches, turkey, personal pizza, Italian ice, hot chocolate, and a ridiculous more amount of options.
TVs had cable and movies for free. Most of them are movies you'd see in theaters like The Hobbit, Pirates of the Caribbean, Marvel, etc., but there were a couple classics like Singing in the Rain and West Side Story. There is also free Wi-Fi.
Continuing my experience, it took them another hour to thaw out my blood from the blood bank, which was okay with me because I was just getting settled. The RN (nurses) were so nice. My nurse, Megan was spectacular. She was so sweet, polite, genuinely caring, and was a pleasure to have. The nurses Jessica and Julie were also very nice. If you needed something (like a warm blanket), they would get it. If you had a question, they would answer it or would find the answer for you. They CNC staff were also very good. They would tidy up your room (take out the trash, bring you water, etc.). Maribel did an excellent job and was very nice. I also met the manager Nancy, who was very friendly. All of the staff would regularly check in on me to see how I was doing and if I needed anything.
I ended up staying for two nights, but it wasn't at all bad. Overall, my experience was an excellent one and I'll be coming back if I have any serious injuries or a case where I'll have to stay the night.
