| - I am a patient at the north Phoenix office - Dr. Jack Anderson. I think the "chiropractors/acupuncture" in the heading above is a bit misleading. Arizona Pain Specialists, in my case, is about a comprehensive pain management plan leading to an improved quality of life.
When my primary care physician referred me here I did my due diligence and reviewed a number of web sites where reviews of this practice are posted. If I relied solely on the Yelp reviews I would have run the other way; or in my case rolled the other way. My experience here is the polar opposite of many of the Yelpers herein. I was able to obtain an appointment within a week, advised over the phone that I could download the new patient paperwork, complete, and bring with me; and shave 30 minutes off my appointment time. I'm a bit OCD so as part of the paperwork I brought my own series of medical records - full list of medications, a 2 page medical history narrative; and a list of my physicians with full contact information; which I attached to their paperwork.
I was greeted courteously, "sorry Mr. A......, the coffee's not quite ready yet (!), seen promptly by a med tech, then a caring and extremely competent Nurse Practitioner - Marisa Rebeka. She reviewed with me at length, my medical history (at 68 years old, there is a lot to review); previous pain management medications and treatments (again quite a few), and then left to consult with the physician - Dr. Jack Anderson. NP Rebeka returned with Dr. Anderson, who had clearly discussed with her my medical records and history; he asked a number of questions, and suggested a treatment plan that encompassed short, medium, and long range planning: deal with the immediate pain, do testing and imaging studies, and look at a variety of long range treatment options. Dr. Anderson presented me with a timeline, and reminded me that my insurance company has a large role in this process as approvals can take time while the insurer reviews medical records.
After Dr. Anderson left (great new baby pictures, Doc) Ms. Rebeka explained to me the Controlled Substance contract , the provisions if which I would need to adhere to, including providing urine samples as requested.; and a psychological test; both required if I desired to be a patient of the office. While I recognize that these are primarily CYA documents brought on by a combination of heavy-handed DEA regulators and medication abusing patients; the need for these was presented in a manner that was truly professional; sort of, "OK, here's what we believe we can do for, and with you; here are some things you need to do if we are to proceed".
The post-appointment scheduling desk reviewed with me future tests, PT providers, imaging centers, confirmed with me the need for cardiologist consultations, provided me medication orders, a written treatment plan, and medical records connected with my visit. I found courtesy and professionalism from all staff with whom I interacted throughout this appointment.
A couple of negatives: (1.) as those who read my reviews know, I comment of mobility accessibility when appropriate. In this area, this practice gets three stars, not five; getting in and out of the office is difficult,and finding a place to to sit in my wheelchair without impeding other patients in the reception area was impossible; another wheelchair patient was also in the reception area and voiced her frustration to me; back office access is no problem; and (2.) the practice has no email accessibility to the practice (!), "just send us a fax"; com'on guys, this is the 21st century. In today's medical practice environment, where my medical records are available via secure portals, and physicians seem to much prefer emails versus phone calls (at least mine do); having a HIPAA compliant portal would seem to be a necessity; and, additionally,resolve the negative issue of accessibility raised by so many reviewers.
That said; if you're looking for a "pill factory", go somewhere else; if you're looking for a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses your pain in the short term, and proposes long term solutions leading to an improved quality of life, this is the place. {Ah Marisa.........if only I were 20 years younger :-).}
