| - With heavy heart I dole out the lowest possible rating for this pub which is a mere 2 blocks from my house; a pub that I have frequented several times, never been impressed, but never been aghast... until yesterday.
The Dark Horse is one of those places that should surprise you with the food, and it usually does, and SHOULD grab a 3 star rating. But I fear that without any other compensation for what was one of the WORST dining experiences I have ever had, I am left with nothing more to do than YELP and vow to never go back.
A long weekend with perfect weather, the patio seemed like a natural choice for lunch. Long time server, we'll call her Katy to protect her identity, was quick with the drink order, and that would be the lone highlight of the visit. I will try to keep this brief(ish):
Ordered food at 12:40. After 40 minutes, and two assurances that food was 5 minutes away, we notice that the table next to us, that had been seated after we had ordered, was getting their food. Katy returns, I inquire if there was a problem, and pointed out the table dining next to us eating and we were now an hour waiting. Her response was that the kitchen makes the easy to prepare orders first. Uh, okay. We had ordered the complex gastro feat of Eggs Benedict, Fish and Chips, and Club Sandwich. Good to know.
At 1:45 Katy comes back to our table with this: "Hey guys, I want to get your set-ups right.. remind me who had what?" Umm... the set-ups were three sets of silverware, all the same. But we dutifully re-ordered an order that had obviously never been placed.
The food arrives at 2:05, without an apology (how can that ever happen? Read about it WAY too frequently) and there was a problem with the Eggs Benny. My partner had asked for no Hollandaise sauce, and the order was swimming in it. She also asked for a side of beans that was nowhere in site. In fairness we ordered 90 minutes ago... I had forgotten that nuance too. The "hashbrown" potatoes were boiled potatoes, only partially cooked, not browned, no onions, peppers etc. Sent it back.
I went in to speak to Katy about this and was shocked by what I saw. The place was empty inside, save the MOUNTAIN of dirty dishes that had overflowed the bus area onto the bar. One person in the kitchen, no one behind the bar. Katy was running the entire front on her own. For this, and despite the lack of apology, or offer of any credit (they struck the Eggs Benny) I didn't take it out on her tip.
To the owner: where were you or the manager on a sunny day over a long weekend leaving the place to be run with one in the back and one in the front? The hospitality business is hard work, get back from the cottage and lend a hand or you'll be out of business before you know it. There are far, far better pubs on the same block, and the patio card is wearing thin.
