 | - Quiet Tuesday night, 1 on 1 service at Cafe Costa Rica, so I think we got to see them at their best. Only people in the dining room while we were there!
When we entered the restaurant, there was a sign saying that we should shake the maracas if a server wasn't available...and lo and behold, the maracas summoned our servers as well as got the attention of the Mango Man in the kitchen.
Everything here is served with Mango Man's two sauces, one red, one green. The red one is a bit more piquant. Not sure how to describe the flavor--not very tomato-y, like most hot sauces, I've seen, more "green".
Appetizers: Patacones, served with beans. The fried patacones are served surrounding a small bowl of cooked beans. Honestly, I had a little trouble discerning the purpose of the beans, but it tasted good when we dipped the slices in the bean juice (it's kinda hard to get beans actually on the plantain).
Entrees:Curried chicken. Curry chicken here is very different from curry chicken I've had at Thai or Indian places. It's really more of a jerk style chicken with very tender, bone in chicken. Both of our chicken dishes really melted off the bone, super moist and tender.
Black chicken. No, this actually wasn't made of the Black Chickens that you may have seen on Iron Chef America. This was rubbed with spices so that it formed a black coating and also braised for a long period of time. Both entrees were tasty, although I lean towards the curry chicken a bit. I could see both of these dishes being a "comfort food" item for some folk. Both entrees served with rice, 1 plantain, and chopped salad. I actually really liked the chopped salad--the salad dressing was so zingy and fresh, with a bit of bite, and cutting the iceberg into strips helped promote its crispiness.
Now, throughout all of this, we notice that it's crap weather and the server is unlikely going to get a lot of customers. So we went for the whole kit and caboodle and got dessert, too. Dark chocolate rum cake. The mango man spared no expensive in copious amounts of dark rum sauce, which is a good thing! Delicious for people who like dark chocolate.
A little bit on the expensive side, IMHO. Overall, satisfied with my experience, food was good, service was attentive.
