| - Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but it seems to me that a library should still be a place where people are quiet and respectful of others and one where the staff models and encourages that behavior. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case at this branch. While I understand that the mixture of books, computers, and workspace is not likely the most conducive to this atmosphere, it would seem reasonable that they post signs asking people to silence their cell phones and keep conversations quiet. However, this is not the case at the Cholla Library and staff couldn't even be bothered to address the young lady whose phone went off numerous times. It seems they more concerned with sitting at their desk rather than getting up and speaking with her about proper library decorum. In fact, I didn't once see the staff talk to anyone about excessive noise.
Maybe they don't want to be viewed as old fashioned or maybe it's because of the fact that I noticed that when the staff went out of public view, many of them immediately began talking in normal conversational tones rather than keeping it down. While they may have been out of sight, they were certainly not out of earshot and this likely makes it hard for them to tell others to keep it down when they are not doing so themselves.
I'm actually wondering why the library even bothers with books anymore when 99% of the people are there for free internet access or to read on their laptops, tablets, or phones using public Wi-Fi? You'd have even more space if you got rid of the stacks and you wouldn't have to waste my tax dollars buying books. Plus, those of us who want to read or study in a quiet facility would know better than to waste our time at that location. Perhaps they should consider having quiet reading areas for those who still value that aspect of the library.
Oh, and a few design notes, what brilliant architect decided to build a two story building but only put restrooms on the lower level? And yes, the return bins have signs that you can read when you get to them, but perhaps a sign above them saying "return books here" would be helpful as well.
