| - Ah, Mastro's Ocean Club, where the entrees are delicious and the overbearing service is intrusive enough to be highly amusing. We had about four different wait staff serving our table of two with an additional three to four auxiliary members wiping away crumbs (onto the floor and therefore onto my feet), offering white or black napkins, freshening bread baskets, quizzing us about wine selections, asking about every bite of the meal, etc. I've been to some astounding and amazing restaurants the world over, and personally I prefer attentive service that is seamless and not disruptive to the meal in any way. Though polite and attentive, Mastro's was just too much effort and not a lot of panache. I felt like we were being constantly interrupted in the midst of what was otherwise a very romantic date night out on the town.
My partner and I had the calamari, lobster bisque, chopped salad, filet mignon, salmon, a side of green beans and almonds, a side of scalloped potatoes, mixed beverages, wine and chocolate cake for dessert, so we sampled quite a lot. And, by a lot, I mean we had epic amounts of food remaining to take home. The entrees were amazing and the steak was one of the best I've had as it was seared on the outside and perfectly cooked inside. The chopped salad was over dressed and the bisque was pretty tasty. (What can I say? I lived in Boston for a long time...I'm a lobster bisque snob.) The sad part of the evening was when we got home with our food to go to find that only the cake and beans had made it home with us, delicious leftover steak and potatoes finding a home someplace else.
So, good food, excellent steak and seafood, skip the appetizers, order something besides the chocolate cake, and make you sure check your leftovers before you head home dreaming of scalloped potatoes for breakfast.
