| - Legit - my expectations working with Josh Wolinsky (owner at Training Revelations) are not only met but they have been surpassed! Here's my story.
Earlier this year, I moved to Pittsburgh from Chicago for a job change. As you can imagine, the stress of working for a new company, uprooting my life and settling into a new city started adding up. I wasn't as fit as I had been in the past and was ready for a change. I decided to look for a trainer and since I didn't know many people in Pittsburgh, I checked out reviews on Yelp to help me find a well recommended, highly rated trainer. I wanted results, but not at any cost. I didn't like the idea of hiring a "rent-a-jock" at a gym who would only be interested in making a quota that week or focusing on the exercises they preferred that didn't meet my needs/capabilities, or someone who wasn't invested in ensuring my training experience was sustainable. I also wasn't crazy about the idea of doing all of my learning in a crowded gym with prying eyes and jockeying for equipment or space.
Instead, I wanted to find a trainer who was extremely knowledgeable about working towards a holistic health and well being state, strength training, stretching and recovery, and more importantly somewhat who could work with me to build a program that was customized to meet my unique goals. I found this and more with Josh. Just reading the other reviews, I could tell that Josh was a person who cares about and invests in the people he trains. Most of his clients have been with him for years - and are still getting results!! Whether they are rehabbing, pre-habbing, strength training or body sculpting - they all spoke so highly of Josh's ability to meet their training needs and do it consistently. I was equally impressed with Josh's background in social work as described on his website - which adds a great dynamic to his ability to effectively interact with people from various backgrounds and walks of life.
Since I had never worked with a trainer before, I initially contacted Josh by phone. We spoke briefly and agreed on a time where I could pop by his studio for an initial consultation. Loved that idea by the way! When we met, Josh asked a lot of questions to get to know me, my lifestyle, my fitness and personal goals - which was great because (as he explained) training is more than lifting weights and breaking a sweat - it's a lifestyle of wellness. He also explained how he works with clients (scheduling, communication, developing training plans, follow-up, etc.). One of the many things I admire about him is that Josh doesn't just train anyone. He's not interested in quick fixes - he'd rather focus his time and energy to work with people who are interested in learning, growing and making physical culture a part of their regular lives (whether with him or on their own).
So I decided to give it a shot!
In early March 2016 we began training together. It started out with an initial session where Josh could assess my capabilities and I can get a sense of his training style. From the start, I felt at ease in his studio and with him. He communicated not only what to do, but also why the things were were doing were important. His wealth of knowledge about the human anatomy, how the body works, and of various strength training techniques was tremendous and obvious. His demeanor was easy going and so comfortable that I never once felt awkward, uncomfortable, or "like an idiot" for not knowing something.
Fast forward - I've been working with Josh two days a week since March and can already see and feel the difference. I am much stronger than when I started (being able to do things I was afraid to do--like "pull ups"--with relative ease now), I am more knowledgeable about my own body (its abilities and limitations), and I'm more confident about achieving my fitness goals. That's all thanks to Josh. I am so excited about my sessions each week because Josh keeps them fresh, new, interesting and most importantly challenging! And the results have come!!
One other point I'd like to share...I tweeked my back about two months ago. Because of his extensive rehabilitation work, Josh was able to help me work through my back pain quickly. He showed me some stretches to help with the tension - while also customizing our sessions to work around my back (and in some cases, eliminate the back from being used altogether), so my workouts were still effective. I mean, truly a W.O.W. experience!!
If you're considering getting a trainer and want someone who can be a strong partner in helping you reach your fitness and wellness goals, I highly recommend Josh! For me, he's one of the best experiences I've had since moving here and has beyond delivered on every expectation I've had working with a trainer.
