| - Created from abandoned TTC streetcar barns this environmentally responsible building houses 2 theatres along with other businesses and a number of artist live/work spaces in addition to providing shared space to hold events (beer tastings, vinatge clothing sales, wedding receptions). I mainly go there for the farmer's market on Saturday mornings (outside under tents in the warm weather, inside during the cold months) which I really enjoy. The atmosphere is friendly, the vendors are knowledgeable, and the food is mainly sourced locally. There is everything from fresh organic produce and meat to ready-made meals. You'll also find preserves (pickled beets etc.) kimchee, kombucha, coffee, candles, honey, and essential oils and hand-made soaps.
"The Stop" community food centre has a permanent restaurant there (also open on Saturday mornings) they run community and sustainable eating programs and oversee a greenhouse space (you can take a self-directed tour) and culturally themed gardens.
For fun there is a drop-in story tent (every other week) with Storytelling Toronto from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. which is a great family activity (and free).
Outside there is a large playground (and space to play in the sand), as well as a "beach" volleyball court, and a splash pad. In the winter there is a usually an ice rink. All year round there is a small dog park. Dog owners are very considerate and tend to keep their off-leash dogs in the park, not in the shared space.
A great place to meet people from the neighbourhood and get to know who grows your food. You can sign up for their newsletter to keep in the loop.
