| - Charming atmosphere. Outstanding service. Delicious food!
While visiting Charlotte for only one night following our honeymoon, my husband and I stopped in The Asbury on a Sunday night.
Atmosphere: The restaurant is small but elegant and warm, I recommend a seat near the window so you can watch the downtown foot traffic. There were simple and beautiful wildflower arrangements on each table.
Service: Southern hospitality at its finest! The hostess found out that we were celebrating our honeymoon and sent out some champagne for us to enjoy. Our server (Donald, I believe) was really knowledgeable about the origin of all of the locally grown food and also made excellent wine and beer recommendations.
Food: We started with the pickled shrimp and boudin over hominy grits and tomato poblano broth ($14). The dish was great, with lots of textural components between the grits and the crispy boudin. The pickled shrimp was served cold over the hot components, which was surprisingly delicious. We didn't pick up on much of the poblano flavor, but the overall flavor was still amazing.
Next we split the carrot dish, which was different preparations of carrots over a puree ($8). It was tasty and beautifully plated. It was a good portion for two of us to share.
We also ordered the Duo of Heritage pork, which included pork belly and loin ($28). It was served over pecan-blackberry BBQ sauce (SO delicious... they should bottle it!), a mixture of peas and lima beans. There was also a delightful popcorn emulsion that beautifully complemented the pork.
Finally, the chef sent out an amazing dessert variety. Chocolate olive-oil cake with lightly whipped mousse, some kind of shortbread with whipped cherry mousse, etc. They were all delicious and beautiful, but we were really full by that point.
I highly recommend this restaurant! AMAZING!!
