  • This was my first time staying in Downtown Phoenix, and the two nights made me go hmmm. Not mmm, but hmmm because I would have expected the sixth largest city in the country to be a bit more lively after 5PM. Nope, it was still as a tomb on the blocks surrounding the hotel and not because things close down either. I don't think it's related to the weather either because 100-degrees ain't that hot in Phoenix. In the middle of this ghost town is the Hyatt which appeared to be nearly as empty. It looked like most Hyatt Regencys in that it was handsomely appointed in that cavernous way that most of their hotels have that's both cozy and off-putting (photo: http://bit.ly/2hT15vS). For the relatively bargain rate of $109 per night, they gave me a Single Queen room on the 16th floor (photo: http://bit.ly/2uxfweT). It offered a nice view of the eastern part of the valley to allow me to have deep thoughts about the desert, and there was a gift shop downstairs that allowed me to get a Diet Coke when that desert heat got me a bit parched. All that was well and good, but I need to share a hiccup that occurred. It was all my doing, but the response was telling. Because I was traveling from the much cooler climate of the Bay Area, I had a jacket which I hung in the closet the moment I got there. When I packed up to leave, I completely forgot about it. Of course, I wasn't aware of that fact until I was back in San Francisco on the curb at the airport waiting for my partner and freezing my tookis off. When I called the hotel in a bit of a panic (since my house keys were in the pocket), he said he would call me back after he checked. A half-hour elapsed and I called him still in a panic. He said he checked and didn't find it, but he should have called me back, don't you think? Anyhow, I wouldn't accept no for an answer, so he said he would connect with the housekeeping staff to see if they saw it. This time he did call back to say no. I told him to check again and that I'd wait on the line. He came back on the line to tell me that yes, they have it and that one of the maids just checked it in - even though it was at least 11 hours since I left the hotel at that point. Once they acknowledged they had my jacket, there was a whole process where I had to submit an online request through a separate delivery company who would Fed Ex it to me at my expense (as it was my fault). The jacket arrived intact with my keys inside - but it did bother me how persistent I needed to be to get someone to help me. Things that make you go hmmm. Oh and by the way, parking at the lot next door was on the pricey side, $23 for an overnight stay.
