| - I am a donut (aka doughnut) connoisseur around town, trying to slowly make my way to every dough-ring establishment I can visit. As I live in the southwest, I saw the "donuts" sign looming on Decatur for eons prior to an open sign.
I had no expectations of this place, especially when I realized they offered a smorgasbord of items aside from donuts (yes, tamales and other treats can be found here). That being said, they have a simply delicious donut with original flair, and a glaze that could wonderfully gloss your senses. I think folks have become too accustomed to the gourmet and/or the niche donut vs. appreciating what a donut was intended to be (i.e., not a cake or pie, cookie or candy bar).
I think the cherry cake donuts are some of the best in town! They are moist and dense, yet not overpowering, and chalked full of amazing-ness.
I have only encountered the one lady working at Sunrise. She is always pleasant, giving a few extra goodies upon every visit.
It saddens me, the loss of the actual donut and judging donut shops by that loss. If I wanted a key lime pie or peanut butter and jelly, I would find my way to a pie or sandwich shop. If I want a good donut, Sunrise is on my list.
