  • If I'm flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, I'm usually flying in to work at my Phoenix office. It's just a hop, skip and a jump from San Diego. I can close my eyes and BAM!, I'm there. PHX is centrally located and easy to get to. It's rare that I ever encounter traffic going into and out of the airport. The "lobby" is fairly spacious and clean. There are a handful of places for you to sit, plug in and possibly grab a bite to eat. Bathrooms are 50-50 for me. It just depends on how crowded the airport is. Some days, it's clean as hell. Other days, it's like WTF just happened here. Once you pass the TSA checkpoint to get to your gate, you'll find it a bit more crowded. Well it usually is for me where the Southwest gates are located. There are tons of folks sitting everywhere. And, I mean EVERYWHERE. In the lounges, on the floor, in the walkway halls that connect all the terminals, behind pillars, under the charging station tables...and occasionally, the bathroom. ICK. When this happens, I just walk around to find a restaurant to hang out at. The nice thing about Sky Harbor is that you're not just limited to your gate letter area. If you're willing to walk or want to earn your daily FitBit steps, you can hike around to the other gates (A-B-C-D) to find something you'd like to eat. Me? My go-tos are Cowboy Ciao (Gate B22), La Grande Orange (Gate D1), Olive & Ivy (Gate A3) and Four Peaks Brewery (Gate A20). If you want coffee, there's Starbizzles (B17 & C1), Peet's (D1) and Cartel Coffee (C17).I'm usually at the airport early, so I have a lot of time to explore and choose. Rental car is accessible via shuttle bus and is located outside of baggage claim. Follow the signs. For pick up from the airport, it seems to happen fairly quickly. But, the return trip can be sketchy. My last trip out, we waited almost 25 minutes before a shuttle bus appeared. It's not for a lack of buses. But, we didn't realize that there were TWO Terminal 4 bus pick-up spots. If the spot at the west end fills up and you're standing at the east end of the terminal, you'll get to watch the bus pull past you. We got passed up 3 times, before an empty shuttle stopped in front of our line. Though, to be honest, I'm not sure if that's Sky Harbor's responsibility or the rental car center's problem. Overall, I don't have to many bad experiences, so I'm ranking this a 3.5 star, rounding up to a 4.
