  • I so wanted this to be better than it was. I really think this type of business would be better suited on Monroe St or even Verona or Middleton. But State Street is not a great spot for it. Winedown is located in what used to be Diego's (and Moe's Tavern and Grill and Zander's Capitol Grill). The space seems overwhelming for what is basically just a wine bar. I like the purple color touches and the decor; it works well with the brick walls. It's nice that they do have the space to host their multitudes of events, but I have no idea how well those are attended. We had a Groupon which gave us each 3 wine samples and a bottle to either drink there or take home. You could choose a red or white flight, but you couldn't pick different flights. We went with the red. We were there shortly after they opened on a weekday, and there were about 5 other people in the bar with us. Even with that few of people to tend to, we still had to wait and flag the bartender (owner?) down to get our check taken care of. It looked like there were board and card games that you could ask the bartender to borrow. There was not a lot of seating around or near the bar- maybe 3 barstools total and a few arm chairs along the wall. The prices for a glass of house wine was not bad ($6/glass), but the bottle prices were expensive! We ordered an extra glass of prosecco. Our server told us that normally, a glass of that is $14/glass I believe, but the wine menu led me to believe it was the same price as the other wines. We got lucky because a bottle was already open, so she only charged us $6. I would not have ordered it if I knew it was almost double the price of the other wines. They did have liquor available for cocktails as well. According to other reviews, it seems like they serve food, but we were not offered a food menu when we got there at prime dinner time. That also doesn't seem to be advertised on their website, last I looked. If they don't serve food (which they should, even if it's just small plates), they should allow food to be carried in. I can't say I'll be back. I don't think they are marketing to the right crowd and communication about what is and isn't available has me wary to return.
