Saturday in the park
I think it was the Fourth of July
People talking, people laughing
A man selling ice cream
Singing Italian songs
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I've been waiting such a long time
For Saturday..." Robert Lamm
No need to wait for the Fourth of July or even a Saturday to enjoy all that Lakewood Park has to offer - get your tuchus moving.
I'm spoiled because Lakewood Park is only a block from my parents' house so when I'm visiting with them I make sure that I make a daily pilgrimage to enjoy the lake views and the cool breezes in the summer.
This park has plenty to offer:
a) Kids play areas which aren't too overcrowded
b) Foster Pool where you can cool off during the humid Cleveland summers, just don't drink the water since there are plenty of kids of all ages which take advantage of the convenience of "letting go" in the pool (I wouldn't worry, there's more chlorine than water)
c) Sand volleyball courts, not quite Venice Beach, but you may get a glimpse of the Full Cleveland on display
d) Softball fields - a tradition in NE Ohio and you can cheer for your favorite tykes. Always fun.
e) Picnic areas with grills and tables are scattered throughout, although there may be stiff completion for the grills
f) There is a skatepark too. I think the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and Lakewood PD decided that it would be better to consolidate all the skateboarders in one place rather than have them take over downtown Lakewood. It's fun to watch our future leaders do their tricks here.
g) On Sunday nights there are free concerts at the bandshell, check your local listings for who's playing.
But for me the attraction is the ability to take a leisurely walk through the park and down to the lake. Access to the lake was not an option when I grew up in Lakewood, unless you wanted to scale the steep cliffs and get busted by the cops, but now there is a walkway down to Lake Erie where you are rewarded with an unobstructed view of Cleveland's skyline, the sounds of the lapping water, and the entirety of the NE Ohio shoreline. Have fun!
