| - Without exaggeration, this is the best coffee I have ever had. For such an excellent cup, you need three ingredients: fresh beans, excellent owners, and good company. Desert Wind Coffee Roasters exceeds in all of capacities.
If you want fresher beans, you might as well travel to the tropics and harvest them yourself. Burlap sacks of the raw stuff rest in the open. I practically propped up my feet on one of these bean-bag ottomans today. If you're curious about what to order, the owners Joseph and Pam will scoop handfuls from the burlap for you to sense. Behind the counter, in plain view, is the roaster itself, and if you stay past four o'clock on a Saturday, you'll even see them fire it up. Sipping your last espresso to close-out the joint, you'll find yourself bathing in the richest, smoothest aroma; it will embrace your every fabric and follow you home.
Joseph and Pam are to thank for such a ideal coffeehouse. Though they primarily started as coffee roasters, they have decided to expand into the property next door and become a full cafe. Business has been that good. Months ago, when I first visited, I was alone at 4:00 as the place closed. Just today, I left at 4:30 and the intimate seating area was nearly packed. Aside from the quality coffee, Joseph and Pam's welcoming demeanor are responsible for this success. They will introduce nearly every new customer to the menu, including the Breaking Bad inspired espressos, which are less gimmick and fully, well-honed culinary science, of which Heisenberg would be proud. The rest of the customers are regulars, greeted by name each and every time, along with an offer of "the usual." Even after one visit, Joseph recognized me and said, "You ordered the Heisenberg. That's a strong cup. Means you really enjoy coffee." Hospitality like that separates independent business from the corporate.
Finally, the company is good, quiet, intelligent, and when appropriate, friendly and outgoing. The perfect cafe crowd. My only concern with the expansion and all these positive reviews is that it may pull in those without the manners to respect such an atmosphere. However, what brings me peace is that Desert Wind Coffee Roasters is quintessentially Vegas - text book unassuming. Even with the expansion, it will remain tucked in the corner of a nondescript strip mall. I don't believe it even has a sign on the street. Honestly, I hope it stays this way. Vegas local places hide in plain view and focus more on quality and warmth than theatrics, and Desert Wind Coffee Roasters is a gem of an example.
