  • I went to Toronto for a conference a couple weeks ago and stayed three nights at the Sheraton, sharing a room with a friend, who'd booked early at the conference rate. About six weeks before this trip, my husband Matt B. decided to join for the weekend, as neither of us had been to the city before. The rack rate for the Sheraton was stupidly high, and it was even a bad deal with Starwood points. When I saw there was a luxury hotel a couple blocks away, with a cash and points rate that was only a little bit higher than the Sheraton's, I decided to book that instead. I soon learned that the Adelaide was recently a Trump hotel, bankrupt and rebranded, in transition to becoming a St. Regis. I guess one benefit of Trump's insane megalomania is that his hotels are generally easy to avoid. I would've been pretty upset if I found out I'd given him money on accident. Even this felt like a close call. The hotel was gorgeous. I don't know if it's changed at all since it's Trump days, but if it hasn't, I'd say it was remarkably tasteful for a Trump hotel. Definitely more Ivanka than Donald, the flashiness more of the sumptuous white leather sofa variety than gold and marble dictator chic, with only a few odd telltale details that went over the top. The lobby was enormous and beautifully decorated, with high ceilings and interesting art and furnishings. It was all very impressive without feeling oppressive. Service was top notch, super attentive and friendly. One of my friends came by to meet up for lunch, and by the time I went to get her in the lobby forty-five seconds after she arrived, she'd already been greeted and offered water. The desk staff, the bell hops, everyone was just on their luxury hotel team game. We were only staying for one night, with late check-out, and we got some kind of crazy upgrade to a suite on a high floor. This was one of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in. The bedroom was grand and lovely with a wonderfully comfortable bed. The huge attached bathroom had heated floors. The rest of the suite was probably somewhat wasted on us, since we weren't hosting a party (we should've hosted a party). There was a full-on living room, with a bar to one side, a desk on the other, a spacious lounge area in the middle. Also, a powder room. It was almost too bad we couldn't spend more time in the room, but we had a lot to do in our rush tour of Toronto, and The Adelaide provided a spectacular home base, in a convenient location to boot. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay at this hotel. I imagine it'll only get better as it loses its last Trumpy finishes to become a St. Regis.
