| - Brand spanking-new low-key higher end hotel in the modern design/vibe, with all the blessings and curses of the type.
Location: this is a few blocks into the Strip District, and thus sort of equally inconvenient for downtown destinations and Strip District destinations by foot. It's doable, but schlepping back and forth in the July humidity every day became a bit dreary. They do have a courtesy shuttle for places within a couple of miles of the hotel, fwiw.
The lobby is inconveniently located on the second floor, so you have to take a small elevator up from the street. This was not the easiest place to get in and out of. But the lobby does have a nice little panoramic view of I-279, a streak of the Allegheny, the northside, and a gigantic parking lot that pretty much surrounds the place.
Staff are very attentive and courteous here, but it's not really a full-service hotel. No concierge, limited bar hours, the tiny shop was out of toothpaste and had only the junkiest of junk food at the usual ballpark prices. You have to go to the lobby to get ice!
No room service; you can order from the restaurant next door for delivery to the front desk, or have take out delivered to the front desk. Lidia's the higher end place in the same building but strangely only accessible by exiting the lobby, taking the stairs down, exiting the building, and going around the corner, is so-so and just not really a hotel restaurant.
The rooms are large and suite-ish, with a good-sized kitchen. Which would normally be great, but there is literally no place to buy groceries in downtown Pittsburgh. There isn't even a real convenience store within five blocks. So you can stash your leftovers in the fridge, I guess. But there's no refuge option for food here unless you like $8 microwave pizza, despite having the full kitchen.
Breakfast was decent each day, with the menu varying, although they occasionally ran out of the hot items and one had to wait way too long for them to replenish them. There is a "happy hour" buffet (free) from 5-7 Mon-Thurs that had plenty of food, buffet style, and has a different theme every night.
The rooms have separate air and fans, although the windows don't open, it was comfortable enough. The doors are heavy, but the slamming from neighboring rooms was occasionally in evidence. Housekeeping was fine, although they missed some unidentified spatter at floor level on the cabinets, which kind of grossed me out.
Major downmark from me for having the modern shower-only bathroom; not only no tub, no closing door on the shower, just a half glass! The floor in front of the toilet accumulated water very quickly no matter where I put the shower nozzle. I'm sure housekeeping is thrilled about this design feature 8-(.
I expect somewhat more in the way of amenities for the price, given the somewhat out of the way location, but overall it was a pleasant stay and you can do a lot worse in terms of room comfort in downtown Pittsburgh, very easily.
