| - European Food Market.. Sounds like some extra cool superstore with neon lights and multiple departments, maybe a disco ball "euro" style..
But in truth this your most friendly and welcoming authentic "Russian" food store. You walk into a small store and before you know it, a man with a great smile greats you at the door, immediately introduces himself, and makes you feel like you are his good old' friend.
David is not only the owner/manager/cashier/host/entertainer of his European Market, he is also a chef, and he knows his food..
And here is a secret: there is a door on the back of his store, just like in Pinocchio story, remember? A doorway that leads into a real European night life: with life music, exquisite European traditional dishes, served by quick and extremely good-looking waiting staff ( come and see it for yourself :), drinks, and laughter and dancing until dawn..
During early evening hours the atmosphere is more intimate, dim lights, smell of delicious food freshly made to order by experienced chef with a few helpers..
"Just tell me Vat You Vant, and I will make it for you" I hear a loud voice with the rolling "r".
A man is grinning and looking like he would not take "No" for an answer.
"I, mmmmmmm I do not eat meat", I am getting shy here, I know Caucasian kebabs and variety of meat and poultry dishes is the specialty of the place..
"No prrroblem, we'll make you a cake", I hear and I cannot refuse this amazing invitation.
The immigrants from the former Soviet Union: Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Ukraine,Russia, Belorussia, called "Russians" in United States for simplicity sake. We are frequent guests at this place. We come here because in this store we could find all the delicatessens and treats we could only dream of back then, in our former life.
This assortment of cold meats, cheeses, candies, amassing dairy products, brings me back to my childhood. Our homes were shared by kids, parents, grandparents, cousins with one centerpiece - big dining table with frequent celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, New Years and many more reasons for a great home made meals: red caviar sandwiches, sliced herring w white onions, potatoes with garlic, dill and butter and bread, white bread with delicious crust, always fresh with butter.... Mmmm, sweet memories..
Almost every Friday afternoon I walk into this little store on 7th street and Union Hills, and I know I will be greeted by it's owner David, meeting strangers, making instant friends, telling anecdotes, sampling the bakery and laugh just because it reminds us of home.
Come and share this experience! You will feel loved, fed, cared for.. Did I mention you can try some candy and cake?
I love it!
