| - So we are self proclaimed Meat Heads. We love a good steak and often seek out a good steak house when we travel. We love love love the Gallagher's in New York City, so when we realized there was a Gallagher's at New York, New York here we jumped at the chance to have a little taste of home in Las Vegas. I am sad to report that this Gallagher's is a poor substitute for the original. It doesn't even qualify as the first runner up... for the $1.98 beauty pagent.
What makes Gallagher's exception is not just their steaks, which if you visit the one in Manhattan are on display as they are aged on the premises, but the experience. Their service, the atmosphere with all the old pictures on the walls of former famous patrons along with their traditional steak house menu, cuts and sides are all part of the package.
The one in Vegas falls short of an exceptional experience on every count. Our usual order is the Porterhouse for two with creme spinach, mash potatoes and the house salad. We were so disappointed by the lack of service. Our steak was practically dropped in our lap without so much as a word of explanation or a offer to serve a single piece.
This lack of service is only over shadowed by the fact that they can not possibly be using the same meat purveyor or method of dry aging. The quality of the steaks is not the same as Manhattan restaurant. There are no steaks on display or visible aging room. The pictures on the walls in Las Vegas look like they came out of the MGM studios set design or art department, not collected over years of actually services. I am pretty sure Rock Hudson and many of the others were six feet under before the Vegas location ever broke ground.
On a positive note the steak was good (not great) and did come out cooked appropriately to order. The Moscow Mule I ordered had a nice blend of ginger and lime. I really enjoyed the cocktail. I suppose if I did not know the original, I might feel differently. However, for me the only similarities between the Manhattan Gallagher's and the New York, New York Gallagher's in Vegas are the prices. So go once if you must just to say you have, but after that, save your Gallagher's experience for the next time you are in Manhattan.
