| - Setting the mood: My first visit to Montreal, mid afternoon, brisk April day as a stranger (i.e. American) in a strange land. Happened upon La Mie Matinale with my better half approximately 1 hour post arrival to Montreal during an extended walk down Rue Sainte-Catherine. To call this place enchanting is a bit of an understatement. Not to mention the bewitching "come-hither" looks from extensive memorabilia of performer/seductress Dalida (yes, I had to research her post-visit; but I could see her delicious appeal long before my Google search.)
A bountiful display in the cases: loaves of bread presenting like works of art, tins of heavy topped muffins, trays of moist danishes & artisanal sandwiches, all of which screamed "Pick me, pick me!". I was teeming with indecision but trusted the better half to go with ham and cheese on a baguette...simple, understated and perfect. We also shared a croissant that was tender, flaky and a melt in your mouth texture. The gentleman behind the counter handled the ever growing line of patrons like a champ, which extended to the front of the store. I sensed more attitude and glares of judgment from fellow customers, not those behind the counter.
So plan to visit, patronize & frequent this charming establishment... and a sincere "Thank You" to La Mie Matinale for a memorable experience in your beautiful city.
