| - ORIGIN INDIA
4480 Paradise Rd
Las Vegas, NV 89169
My son and I, who love to try new things and also love selecting favorite ethnic restaurants, have been hitting the Las Vegas India food places. Most seem to lie in the Tropicana/Paradise area of town. We tried many of the hole-in-wall lower star restaurants first with not much liking, and now we're trying some of the 4-5 star selections. Origin India is our third 4-star restaurant to try this week. We feel our results are better if we compare all of them fairly close together. We ate here today at about 4pm for dinner service.
Things we are noticing that seem in common for the India restaurants is most service is pretty slow and most food is served lukewarm. We believe this is a cultural thing with newer restaurants that have opened in Vegas, while the ones that have been here for a long while seem to be Americanizing with better service and hotter temperatures for served food. But our selections are based on the taste of the food and at least moderate service.
AMBIANCE: The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice. The room was large and filled with tables but not crowded together. A large television set was showing India music videos but it was turned way down so as not to disturb diners. The tables are set up to show off a little elegance with cloth napkins. It looks extravagant but yet the prices are not extravagant. We arrived at 4pm and it was 103 degrees outside, yet inside it was very cool.
SERVICE: I prefer service with a smile. It's nice when it looks like the workers enjoy their place of business. Our hostess/waitress smiled and was very pleasant. Our waiter/check bringer didn't smile but did provide refills in a timely manner. Surprisingly, the food was served quickly compared to our other experiences where it took over thirty minutes to receive the first of several dishes. Our food came out at the same time along with the appetizer. And the food was a little better than warm, certainly not lukewarm as we usually expect and receive it. It wasn't hot but it was much warmer than we've been receiving it in other India restaurants.
FOOD: For drinks we had water and tea. I asked about flavored teas but was told they only had regular ice tea. The tea was fresh and good. We ordered Keema Nan ($4.95) which is naan bread stuffed with ground lamb. Sorta like a flat bread but the lamb was inside the bread. Delicious! I ordered Chicken Karahi ($15) listed under chef's specialty low spice heat which is boneless chicken stir fried with bell peppers and onions with a thick tomato paste-like sauce. My son ordered Lahori Goat Korma ($15) high spice heat which is goat braised in a spicy ginger-garlic sauce and finished with fried onions and yogurt. The food was served family style filling two five inch round bowls about three inches deep, to over flowing. The Chicken Karahi was delicious, only mildly spiced just as I asked and had a surprising amount of meat in it compared to most orders we've requested. The Lahori Goat was bland. We tasted neither ginger or garlic. It was laced with small bone pieces which made it difficult to eat, and although it was selected for top spiciness, my chicken was spicier than it. Also the Goat did not come with fried onions or yogurt. Although I doubt that would have helped the dish.
The total for the meal was just over $28 (not including tip) since we used an Entertainment Book coupon for $15 off. So the prices were good, but the food was hit and miss. Plus they did not offer "Buttered Chicken" which I was hoping to try.
