| - This review is for an appointment with Dr. Yanofsky at this location in Sept. 2014.
Upon beginning an eye exam on my almost-3-year-old, Dr. Y asked if my son knew his letters. I told him yes. I noticed my son was slow to name the letters that I knew he knew. I guessed this was an indication of some vision weakness. But since it was happening quite a bit during the exam I wondered if the strangeness of the procedure was simply competing for my son's focus. I almost said something, but then thought, nah, he knows how to work with little kids.
So my son was prescribed glasses. The glasses made his eyes hurt and he wouldn't wear them. We went back for another exam. This time Dr. Y used the E chart. The results were totally different. Dr. Y said he didn't think he needed glasses, but he could give him a mild prescription to use during screen time to reduce eye strain if I wanted. "I wanted" my 3-year-old's eyes to feel better, so I said ok. He tried them for the next three months, putting them on or taking them off when he felt discomfort. He finally decided they weren't helping him. I limited his screen time to 40 minutes per day and that helped the most.
Now, on to the woman who helped us choose the frames. I don't know her name so I'll call her "Woman of Few Words". This was a woman in her 60s. This was my first experience with choosing frames, as I never had glasses. After her services, I was presented with a bill of $448!
"But I'm an unemployed single parent on AHCCCSS, I said. I thought this was covered."
"Not all, she said. The actual total is $608, but with VSP, you get a discount, so you only have to pay $448."
I was new to AHCCCSS and assumed she knew what she was talking about. I put the bill on my emergency credit card.
Today I was on the phone with AHCCCSS discussing my son's plan and the representative was appalled that I had paid anything out-of-pocket, as AHCCCSS covered the exam and glasses!
