| - 3.5/5 hype much?
This must anticipated matcha heaven is finally opened. Arrived during rush hour on a weekday, the line was all the way to the door. Right now with 5 staffs working here, the wait time is around 20-30min. The store is small with only 3 2people table and 1 larger table on tatami that can comfortable fit 4 people. So Tsujiri will be a grab and go kinda place. Anyway, not a fan of the store's layout, the tight seating space provided can't really provide enough space for people to chill without being watched and surrounded by the people waiting in line.
The menu has over 50 items, includes pastries, sundae, soft serve, shaved ice, floats, ice blended drinks, Toronto exclusive hot drinks and matcha tea. All the items are labeled with leaf icons to indicate how strong the matcha taste in them. 3 leaves one would be the most bitter one.
I ordered 1 medium O-matcha black sesame latte($6) and 1 O-matcha cream puff($2.75).
The latte is just a matcha latte topped with some black sesame powder. It is incredibly aromatic, mostly the smell of black sesame. The first sip is filled with black sesame flavour, then the bitterness from the matcha kicks in. It tasted similar to the Starbucks green tea latte, but the matcha taste is more intense, it is "medium" on the matcha scale(2leaves).
O-matcha cream puff is around the size of a child's fist. At first I thought it is just a regular cream puff, then I noticed the cream puff's craquelin(the crumble topping) has matcha in it, tiny detail~ The cream puff is stuffed with half whipped cream and half matcha custard. Taste pretty good, the whipped cream complements the matcha custard very well. I kinda wish the cream puffs are smaller, it was a bit messy eating it. (2 leaves on the matcha scale)
The overall experience was good, quite pricy. Having a matcha drink and a matcha pastry together was a little overwhelming, I had an empty feeling afterward lol. If it wasn't because I have to ride ttc during rush hour I would've gotten a sundae, they look so cute!! I would definitely come back to try out other items. If you are a matcha lover who doesn't mind the waiting time, this is the place for you. If you are not familiar with matcha, I'd recommend to pick an item with less matcha in it. Hopefully the lines will move faster here as they get the hang of it.
Looks like anything from Japan or related to Japan would be praised and considered better. Pretty interesting. Cakes takes a long time to bake I understand, but these drinks and sundaes shouldn't take so long to make.
Note: No debit or credit during the first week of opening.
