  • Look, 'The Titanic' and 'Avatar' and even 'Ghost' (with Pat Swayze) made over a billion dollars. They had lots of fans and many of those fans saw the movie multiple times at the local cineplex. I only bring this up because it just proves that people have poor judgement. Those movies were terrible. A Heiress would not fall in love with a peasant boy who draws with cheap pastels. Weird / oblong blue people shooting arrows around a Redwood Forest aren't anybody you can root for and nobody sits on a ceramic potting wheel and makes sweet love while molding a Eucharis Grandiflora vase. Come on. It goes both ways, people. I see here that the El Cortez Hotel and Casino (or, 'The Chateau of Clark County', as I call it) received and average of but 3 Stars. This is an outrage and I blame people for this. The same people going to see those crappy movies over and over again. The El Cortez is old. There aren't really many places like it in existence anymore. I like trampy dressed go-go dancers like every other man, woman or child....but there aren't any platforms in this joint where one of them could dance on. Meanwhile, they don't play house/electronic music, either. There's 100 years of smoke in this place. I can't describe the smell in those elevators by the gift shop, but it's a cross between your Grandmothers basement (and I always liked that smell) and freshly boiled hot dogs ('Ditto'...just like Demi Moore said in 'The Ghost'). The casino doesn't appear to have been refurbished in any way and the clientele seem to be the bourbon chugging, leatherskinned, chain-smoking, cowboy hat wearing, regional folks who have lived in the SW far too long. It's really a lot like Deadwood, SD (minus the leatherskinned thing). This is not a bad thing at all. In fact, I embrace it. I fancy downtown more than the actual Strip these days and you don't get this crowd on The Strip. This venue has a terrific casino. It's just off of the Fremont Street Experience so you won't hear the Judas Priest and Cinderella cover bands in your room when you're getting all spruced up for a night out on the town. I seem to get more perks and comps from the lowest tier players card here than I ever do with my Platinum MLIFE card. I'm sure the Vintage Rooms resemble a seedy, low-rent motel off of a highway in rural New Mexico, but I have always stayed in their Design-A-Suite rooms and they're perfect. 700 square feet - a sofa - a king size bed (comfortable) - a jet tub (for when I need to soak my supple skin and/or have a powerful thrust of water clean out the ole pooper) - a refrigerator - a ice machine directly outside the door - and a tumbleweed lamp. That's right, you don't get that over at the Aria, kiddos. The only negative is that these rooms face the NW - the heart of N Las Vegas...so chances are you'll get to see Jerry's Nugget Casino and a portion of Highway 95. You'll hear some sirens, but you're safe from harm in these hallowed halls. The other issue facing this direction is that you have to be careful and not leave the bathroom window open if there's going to be a dust storm overnight. I'm not sure what housekeeping must have thought of me when they saw an entire shower and the surrounding tile covered in desert muck, but I left a Andrew Jackson on the bedside to ease their worries. I will probably never NOT stay here on my annual 3-4 treks to the 702. I love it and, yes, that's a person passed out under the blanket on the sofa in the picture.
