I had high expectations but left disappointed when I visited Montelucia for cocktails with friends on Thanksgiving Eve. While the resort is beautiful in both decor and ambiance (4 stars) the service I received in several areas of the resort was less than satisfactory.
First, Montelucia advertised on their Facebook page that their pre-Thanksgiving party included happy hour cocktails from 5 - 7pm. When we got there at 6:20 we went to the bar on the patio for a glass of wine and received a tiny PLASTIC wine glass with house red wine for $10. When I asked about the pricing the waiter was extremely rude and said snarkily, "Happy hour is only inside the Prado bar, so do you want the wine or not?" We grudgingly paid for it only to notice a few seconds later a 2 inch crack in the plastic cup. The cheap wine was dripping out barely missing my dress. Inside, wasn't much better as I was charged $11 for a mojito, and was then given a dollar back from the waiter for "happy hour". Are you kidding? Meanwhile my friend was charged $6 for her margarita.
Basically the place was chaotic and I thought the staff handled it pretty poorly. The security they had trying to keep aisles clear shouted angrily at people throughout the night. Friends of mine had reserved a table with bottle service inside the "VIP" room; however, there was no service to be found. We poured our own drinks and shoveled our own ice (into PLASTIC cups) all night - it got quite messy.
Despite the upscale surroundings, there was nothing sophisticated, refined, or elegant about this event. Next Thanksgiving I'll just go back to my usual - El Chorro Lodge.
