  • My overall experience with Steel City has been horrible to put it mildly. I used the company on a recommendation from a friend and assurance from the representative I dealt with of their quality and value. I will say this, the three movers that performed the move were good guys. They worked very hard, didn't stop all day, and were professional and courteous. However, they badly damaged two pieces of our furniture. I will focus on those rather than mentioning the other pieces that had small dings or scratches from the move. These two damaged pieces began a long process of dealing with Steel City to resolve the issue to our satisfaction. The two pieces were damaged because Steel City underestimated the move. The truck that they brought was not big enough, causing them to make poor decisions on how the furniture should be arranged. In fact, mid move I had to go rent another truck from a local dealer just to get everything moved! As for the two pieces; they damaged an armoire of ours and BADLY damaged our dining room buffet. The armoire was scratched on the top face from something leaning on it and denting and rubbing the finish off. The buffet was damaged because they put a dresser, which was very heavy, legs down, on the top of the buffet. It left huge dents or divets in the buffet and cracked the top. I want to also say this is all Pottery Barn furniture which we have had for years and was in excellent shape. And, on top of that...my wife was very CLEAR to the movers to be extra careful with these particular pieces. The movers were very apologetic about the damage and did offer me a meager nominal refund off of the move. OK, so we're moved, now the issue resolution part takes place. Our main goal in the resolution was to get the furniture to as near as possible to the condition that they were in prior to the move. I first asked for the retail value of the pieces, but Steel City refused and offered to have them repaired. We selected two different repair places for estimate. One on their referral and one that we found. The estimators came and we were more comfortable with the reputation, process, and estimate that one we found provided. However, Steel City refused to use this one and made us go with the one that they referred because it was more economical to them. We weren't exactly comfortable with that, but were in a no win situation here. Their choice performed the repairs and as suspected, the armoire came out OK (not perfect, just OK), but the buffet was less than adequate. You could still easily see where the repairs were done. I'm not sure if this speaks to the skills of their repair person or just how badly it was damaged. We are now in the process of trying to get further remediation from Steel City. Over all, I just can't say enough how disappointed we were with Steel City. To me, they come off as a bunch of kids moving furniture, rather than a true moving company. I would never use them again and I will try to sway others to avoid such a horrible experience.
