| - Less than 40 minutes West of your Vegas hotel is a beautiful seductress. She's nothing like the girls, guys, casinos, clubs, breasts, and fun found in Sin City ... because she is actually real. Her name is "Nature" and she's one Mother I'd Like to Find ... cause her natural beauty is on full display at Red Rock Canyon.
Whether you want to go hiking, enjoy a scenic drive, or dump a body in the desert, few attractions near Las Vegas can rival Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Sure, it's called a canyon, but Red Rock is nothing like the Grand Canyon in size, beauty, or style. You're not looking down at millions of years of sediment and erosion ... you're looking up from an ancient wide valley at rocks ... big red rocks.
* RRC is 17 miles west of the Strip on Charleston Blvd (State Route 159)
* $7 per vehicle
* National Park "America the Beautiful" pass ok ($80/yr or $10/life for seniors)
* Check out free days, like MLK, President's Day Weekend, and Veteran's Day
* A modern Visitor Center (8:00am - 4:30pm) is found at the 2nd road to the right
* The park is over 195,000 acres in the famous Mojave Desert
* Aztec Sandstone rock formations and cliffs are the prominent attraction
* Not all the Aztec Sandstone is red. Which ones are? The red ones...
* The Visitor Center is at 3720 ft while High Point Overlook is 4771 ft
* Some of the mountain peaks are over 7000 and 8000 ft tall
* About 500 million years ago the area was much wetter ... as an ocean floor
* Dinosaur tracks are found in the park. I didn't see any, but they're there, right?
* The desert oasis is supported by springs, creeks, and seasonal rains
* The 13-mile Scenic Loop is paved and takes 45 minutes with no stops
* The Scenic Drive is one-way and open 6:00am to 5:00pm (8:00 in summer)
* There are several spots along the Scenic Loop to park, climb, or relax
* There is a summer campground; Check out the site for fees, availability, & info
* Hikers can enjoy 19 trails & loops; Don't forget you are in the Mojave Desert
* Easiest trails are Lost Creek Children's Discovery and Red Spring boardwalk
* Bicyclists seem to love Red Rock Canyon, too. Don't forget ... Mojave Desert, yo!
* Speaking of the heat/cold ... Here's what to expect by season
- Spring: Comfortable temps with snow lingering in Ice Box Canyon
- Summer: Scorching temps in the 100s; Only the strong survive
- Fall: Warm, but near water some trees have Autumn leaves
- Winter: Cold with snow on the mountains of Red Rock Canyon
* Picnic areas and restrooms are available at some spots
* There are 2 Red Rocks wedding locations ... if the Elvis Chapel thing falls thru
* Stay on roads & trails and leave rocks, plants, & animals alone
* The nearest stores/gas are about 5-7 miles away. Be prepared ...
