| - While this airport restaurant has the Great Dane branding and menu, it is not the same as any other Great Dane you may visit in Madison. A typical Great Dane is fairly well rounded and has pretty decent food, beer, and service. This pub is the airport version of Great Dane so it is severally lacking. There are too many flaws here that I cannot overlook.
I had two hours to kill before my flight upon arriving at the airport brightly and early. Since I had plenty of time, I skipped by $12 airport coffee and breakfast sandwich and instead stopped in at this airport Great Dane. I thought to myself, "Great Dane has okay food so I might as well go somewhere that I know will at least be decent." Unfortunately, this was not the case.
I do not have much to say about the decor. It is obviously an airport space that someone attempted to setup like a pub. It's not horrible, but it still has that sterile airport feeling to it.
Upon walking in there was a sign out that told me to seat myself. No servers were anywhere to be seen so I wandered over to a booth. A Yelp tip claimed there were plugs at all the booths. This was not the case! There was 1 plug on the entire wall.
The sever eventually appeared out of the kitchen and threw a menu down on the table. She was back about 5 minutes later, and I settled on a cup of coffee and the genetic breakfast combo, which comes with eggs, your choice of breakfast meat, and two pieces of toast. Upon asking for the combo the server kind of looked at me and said "uhuh?" I believe the professional way to phrase the question she meant to ask is "What breakfast meat would you like with that and how would you like your eggs done?" It was all, rather rude.
There were two servers staffing the entire restaurant, and I have a strong suspicion that they were also working the kitchen. The floor was frequently empty, and the servers would disappear into the kitchen for some time. They would then reemerge with gloves on. Great Dane, if this is the case, please staff your establishment properly. Several people walked in, sat down, and left because no one was on the floor. You are losing customers! When the servers were on the floor they were having a loud conversation across the space with one another and over the heads of sitting guests.
Eventually my food showed up, and it was highly disappointing. I expected Great Dane to at least bring some consistency to the table, despite this location being in an airport. My bacon was way too greasy. There was a visible puddle of grease under it. I do not think the bacon was drained off after cooking it. The scrambled eggs were way over cooked, slimy, and chewy, The solid mass on my plate was presumably left in a pan to cook and someone walked away.
The toast and coffee weren't amazing, but they were clearly the best part of my meal.
Great Dane, I understand that this location is in an airport so the prices will be higher than usual and quality is going to suffer. Unfortunately, the quality of service and food has suffered so much that I cannot look past it.
If you want a quick bite for breakfast and a coffee, just go spend your $12 at the organic coffee kiosk across the hallway from this Great Dane. The food here is not worth waiting for.
