  • On Thursday July 14 I took our dog Gizmo to get groomed at Villa La PAWS. A few hours later I received a call from the manager telling me that the groomer cut Gizmo during his grooming and it was significant enough for us to need to come and determine if a vet visit was needed. Despite the fact that they have experienced no trouble with him on his previous grooming trips, they immediately blamed the accident on him moving. It is my understanding that a professional groomer should be trained and capable of handling the animals that are left in their care. This is specifically why we pay them to groom our pets rather than just taking the shears to them ourselves! It is also my understanding that when one makes a mistake, one should take responsibility for that mistake rather than lay blame elsewhere. Since this was an actual incision rather than a simple razor burn/nick, we opted to take Gizmo to the vet. To their credit, the manager at Villa La PAWS told us to send them the bill. Since the cut was in Gizmo's armpit, the vet determined that a stitch would be difficult and felt that it would close on its own, so we left with pain killers, an antibiotic shot, and a cone for his head so he wouldn't mess with it. The vet said to bring him back if it did not appear to be healing. Poor little Gizmo was not a happy boy! One would expect that having injured an animal left in their care, someone at Villa La PAWS would have called to see how Gizmo was. Nope. Never heard a thing. After taking great care to make sure Gizmo did not irritate the cut over the weekend, I noticed on Monday July 18th that the cut is split open, oozy and angry looking. He clearly needs to go back to the vet. I called Villa La PAWS to let them know and was told that the owner said they "covered 1 bill" and "aren't covering any further bills." Really???? So I bring my beloved dog to them for a simple haircut, he ends up in a vet and they aren't responsible for any further treatment? After speaking with the manager she did say fax them the bill and they would review it. It is now August 9th, the vet has not received payment for 2nd visit nor will Villa La PAWS even returned their calls or mine. I feel that it is important to share Gizmo's story because apparently Villa La PAWS does not care about the wellbeing of the animals left in their care. If this is how they treat the paying (human) customer, I cannot even imagine how they treat the animals left in their care when you aren't there to protect them! The animals with which we share our lives are part of our family and we expect that businesses set up to care for them do just that...care and protect. If my child came home from daycare with a cut, you bet that daycare would be held responsible. So should it be for animal care providers. Before you take your beloved pet to Villa La PAWS, please consider the treatment that Gizmo and I received. And please share this post and spread the word.
