  • I like Dr Gephart, but did experience over charge problems with the back office that took a long time to resolve. The crux of that issue is, you have to check your insurance EOBs compared to the office billing to see if the office 'inadvertently' charged you and the insurance company too much. Basically if you pay $100, and the insurance pays $200, but the bill was only $250, you should have a $50 credit, right? But you never get a statement showing this - and once you discover it, you ask for the overpayment back, and that's when the wrangling starts. First, when you call, they say "but there's no credit on your account" and maybe most people drop it at that. I learned that if there is a patient credit, they just sweep it into the general fund, so when you know that they have been overpaid, you have to prove it to them and really fight to get your money back. So, that parts pretty aggravating and should cause a lot of people to consider alternative practices. However, a couple of things. The practice staff (dentists, hygienists) are pretty good at what they do. You are getting the most up to date equipment and technology. You are at risk of being upsold/oversold, but that's true anywhere, so buyer beware. With current business practices and models, there is always the danger of being overcharged, and the company not being upfront about owing you money, so in this, be "payer aware." I just had a crown fall out after only 4 ish years. Six months ago, it chipped and I was pretty upset about it. But I don't live in Arizona anymore, so having them 'fix it' was not feasible. I had doubts early on whether I really needed the fairly new filling removed (put in by prior dentist) and replaced with the crown, but I agreed to the work so the decision was ultimately mine. However upset I was about the crown coming out, and 1/4 of it breaking off, the actual metal part of the crown was well-made and earned the compliments of the dentist I went to have it re-glued back in. So I need to give them kudos where deserved, even if there are other concerns with the business. Everything about the function of the practice seemed as one would expect - clean, properly functioning, etc. The doctor is very personable and is skilled at what he does. He has good practice staff. The same-day crown technology is a huge plus, and apparently the machine works well, so that can't be discounted. Do beware of the 'corporate office' and their credit-sweeping practices, which IMHO seems completely unfair to the consumer.
