  • What had started off as a great relationship with Barks and Rec ended abruptly this week. We had been using Pam's side of the business for over a year when an injury to our beloved Cali left her out of commission for the entire summer. Here's the story: I came home from work one day to find Cali limping. When I asked my wife what had happened she said that Kara (one of Pam's walkers) was walking her and that somehow she sprained her foot. I called Kara immediately to get the full story for which she said that she wasn't sure how it happened but that it appeared sprained. The next morning we found Cali limping even more than the day before so figured something was up. We took her to the vet to have her checked out where they ran an x-ray on her paw. The vet came back to us and said that the paw is fractured in 3 places! We were shocked. The vet then proceeded to say that it looked like something was dropped or closed on her paw. I called Kara again to get more details on the story. She said that Cali was simply playing with another dog and that the next thing she new Cali was limping. I found this really hard to believe but had a great relationship with Kara so gave her the benefit of the doubt -- everyone thought I was crazy but fact is that I trusted Kara. I should have listened to my friends and switched dog walkers immediately. 8 weeks since the incident and Cali is still in a splint. We are under strict vet instructions to only take her out to pee and poop and must limit all other mobility throughout the day. This is extremely tough for a lab, especially Cali. Prior to the incident I would take her down to Lake Ontario every morning and swim with her. I would bring her on a stand up paddle board on weekends. And everyday take her to the park, even in -30 weather so that she could chase her ball. None of that is happening anymore and it's killing both me and Cali. She's my buddy and I can't stand seeing her like this. After the incident I called Pam to ask if Kara could continue to just pop by the house to take Cali out for a pee and poop midday. Pam was very nice about it and agreed to make that happen free of charge. I was very grateful for that. However, earlier this week Pam wrote this email to my wife: "Im having trouble seeing the benefit of continuing to try and take Cali out for her pee breaks. Kara is having a lot of trouble getting Cali walking on these breaks and therefore shes either taking much longer or not doing her business. This is looking like a waste of everyone's time." We were shocked when we got this email. Of course Cali is having trouble going out! Her leg is in a splint!! And how dare you refer to this as a waste of time after her paw was broken in 3 places on once of your walks! Sounded like Pam only cared about her business, not Cali's well-being. Not wanting to get into a fight over email I tried calling Pam and Kara multiple times. No one picked up but on my voicemails and text messages I said that I felt like there must be a miscommunication and I'd like to chat it through. No one returned my calls. Instead Pam continued to email, accusing us of being bad pet owners. She said that we neglect Cali and that we are responsible for her broken paw. EXCUSE ME???? I take massive offense to this as Cali has been my buddy since a puppy. We do everything together. We love Cali more than anything. Our 2 little boys LOVE Cali and are heartbroken to see her like this. How dare you blame us for the state she's in. THESE ARE THE FACTS: Cali went on a walk with Kara and came home with a paw fractured in 3 spots. The vet told us that it looks like something dropped or closed on her paw. I wish that Pam and Kara had just owned up to what had really happened instead of hiding and blaming us. Had Pam simply called us and chatted it through, we would've been understanding. Cali deserves much better than that. What disappoints me most about this is how unprofessional Pam is. Stay away from these dog walkers.
