  • My first (and last) appointment with Altered Ego was yesterday. They scheduled me for 4:30, but then called me at 3:15 to explain that the stylist had a "stubborn color," and would be running 20 - 30 minutes late. No big deal. I ran an errand and arrived just before 5:00. Upon checking in, I was informed that the stylist was just finishing up. At 5:15, I was informed again that the stylist was just finishing up. I said, "She was just finishing up 15 minutes ago, but fine. I just want a haircut." Shortly after that, my imaginary haircut began. The stylist asked me what I wanted and I told her that I am not picky about my hair and have always gone to cheap chain places. I was getting tired of every day being a bad hair day, and decided to splurge on a good haircut. I told her that she could use her discretion since she is the expert and I don't know a lot about hair, but that I didn't want it to be really short. As the cut began, she kept combing the back of my hair, and I assumed that it was getting cut as well. It didn't feel like she was cutting much off, but hey...she was the expert and I trusted that she would do a good job. When she started cutting the sides and top, I could see that she was pulling the hair up and holding it between her fingers and very gingerly snipping off about an eighth of an inch. The length she was cutting off was shorter than my eyelashes...It was just teeny tiny little snips. I assumed that at some point she would start to cut and shape my hair and that I would be getting the kind of nice cut that you would expect from an expensive salon. Boy, was I wrong. after cutting tiny snips from what seemed like just random sections of my hair, she said she was going to blowdry it. I said, "It's done? That's the haircut?" She said that it was in fact done. At this point I felt like I had landed in some parallel universe where imaginary haircuts were all the rage, or that maybe I was on a hidden camera show, and that any minute she would laugh and say, "Just kidding! I will cut your hair now. That was a good one! You should have seen the look on your face when I told you that was your haircut!" Unfortunately, that punch line never came. I looked at the little bit of hair on the cape and on the floor, and told her that she hadn't hardly cut anything. She said she could cut more if I wanted her to, but I figured that she would just be mad or uncaring if she cut anymore, so I declined and said I just wanted to pay and leave. She said she would not charge me since I wasn't happy with the cut, and I told her that it wasn't even cut. I also said that I was not trying to get a free haircut, so she charged me a small amount. The whole experience was disappointing. All I wanted was a cute haircut, but it looked pretty much the same as before.
