So I came to this giant supermarket that looked like what would happen if you took Lee Lee's and Food City and combined all their merchandise somewhat haphazardly into an old Kmart. Well, it's a bit better than that. And it's also a bit worse. Grand Opening was IMO complete chaos!! It's in a huge mall just east of the Dobson/Broadway intersection and the store itself faces Broadway. There are all sorts of businesses in this mall like Family Dollar, Koreatown and some other eateries that I couldn't tell if they were really open or not but this supermarket will definitely be the anchor. The Grand Opening was delayed because they needed more time and looks like it will be some time before the place is fully up and running. None of the internal businesses within International Marketplace seemed to be open yet. While I probably didn't make it along every possible pathway due to crowds and craziness I did notice a few things that caught my eye - they had a Burmese section - I don't remember seeing anything like that in Lee Lee's or Mekong or Asiana or any other Asian market in town. I winded up getting a bag of crunchy roasted lablab beans (Shwe Kyet) for novelty and curiosity's sake - ended up being a good beer snack. Unfortunately when I stood in line to pay for my haul that little bag didn't have a price tag and the girl who went looking for it took an eternity to find it. I'm sure the folks in line behind me were annoyed considering every line that day was a mile long. Just about the time I was about to tell the cashier to "forget it" so we could all just go home the girl came back with the price. This place could use better signs and considering how big it is it could definitely use a map with a "hey dummy - you are right HERE!!" red arrow in various parts of the store. One cool thing they had on Sunday was a wandering Mexican band playing music. The speakers were also blasting some kind of tribute to Prince so every so often you'd get a little combination of both. It would've actually been really cool if the Mexican band actually played Prince songs in Spanish with the trumpets standing in for the synth lines - that would have rocked my world like it was 1999.
