  • The fro-yo craze is in full swing in the Annex, with not one, but two new, self-serve, frozen yogurt joints recently opening up. I was super stoked when Menchie's opened up, and I thought I'd give YoYo's a chance to see how they compare. They also had a buy one, get one off promotion, so why not? Unfortunately, YoYo's pales in comparison and is really lacking in many departments. For starters, we arrived around 7:30 PM and it was a dead zone! Not only that, but the cafe was somewhat dimly lit, and didn't really project that feeling of excitement whenever I go out for fro-yo. We were greeted enthusiastically by the one employee who seemed to be working alone for her shift, and offered us a sample of any of their flavours. The downside to this was that the employee managed these samples herself, from a secret stash of samples cups, and there were hesitations to ask for another sample, as we didn't want to impose. I sampled the green tea, but opted for their country vanilla and cappuccino, and was mildly disappointed. Even customers who came in afterwards made comments of disappointment as well, as they sampled the other flavours. It was also difficult to control the levers to portion out how much fro-yo I wanted. A simple pull quickly dispersed tons of fro-yo, more than I wanted. Also, there must have been some poor quality control on the temperature since the texture and consistency was runny, became even runnier as I made my way to the topping station, cash register, and finally to our seats. Lastly, the toppings weren't that great. They had the standard selection of fruits, crushed chocolate bars, and other goodies. I added cookie dough (as always), caramel balls, and butterscotch chips. I cookie dough was more like cookie crumbs, and the caramel balls and butterscotch were rock-hard like jaw breakers. Overall, I give them 2 stars out of 5, and probably won't come back. I'll stick with Menchie's as my go-to fro-yo joint or Greg's Ice Cream as a backup. To those interested in their pricing, their rate is $0.55 per oz, and it appears like they tend to have specials on a regular basis.
