| - Let me start by saying that I've been shopping at this Piggly Wiggly for 11+ years. It has never been anything special, just a convenient place to grab a prepared sandwich or make a salad, as there are so few other choices in Waunakee.
This Piggly Wiggly has been going downhill rapidly. Not sure if there was a management change or something, but on a recent visit (Feb 2018) I found the prepared deli area (sandwiches, party trays) completely empty. Hot food offerings looked like they had been sitting there for hours, and the employees behind the counter wouldn't even look in the direction of several customers standing there, debating whether any of the salads, etc. looked palatable. There are literally employees stacked on top of one another behind the deli counter, but almost no one ever takes the time to serve a customer. They are always so busy cutting and wrapping stuff, looking so busy. It would be nice to know where all the stuff they are cutting and wrapping goes. Another store perhaps? Catering?
Their prices are off-the-charts high on certain items. I have personally compared prepared food items that sell at Woodmans for $2.99 retailing for $5.99-$7.99 at Piggly Wiggly. Surprisingly, the only thing they are priced competitively on is liquor and beer. Perhaps this is what keeps their septuagenarian and octogenarian shoppers coming back, as there is never a shortage of them meandering aimlessly through the aisles.
They also seem to have way too many employees for the number of shoppers in the store. I can only speak for weekdays, but it seems like the number of people stocking the aisles (don't even get me started on the wacky dark-haired guy who is always talking to the soup cans) usually outnumbers shoppers about 3:1.
Waunakee is an upscale, rapidly-expanding community of dual income families. It really deserves a better grocery store than this one.
