| - (Preface: I'm hoping to return to adjust my review after learning Donut Parlor may've reverted their donut recipes for dough and glaze...)
Doughnut-adventuring can be a sort of science. I've now gotten to the point where I seek the unique, strange and un-had by my tastebuds as best as possible within my city limits.
What drew me to Donut Parlor was not all the fun cereal varieties which is what they're popular for, but actually their UBE glazed options! Ube is popular as a flavor in parts of Asia, and to be adapted for a fried doughnut glaze: you got my attention! But I couldn't just stop there, so I picked up additionals for sampling: peanut butter&jelly, cherry pie, cocoa crispies, lemon poppyseed, Ube with captain crunch cereal and "Special K" with freeze dried strawberries and nuts...
I'll keep it short: there was something "off" about the taste of the dough...a taste like bad tap water. And all the glazes lacked any differential flavor...they were simply just straight-sugar-sweet and tasted the same--no matter what the flavor was supposed to be or the color...it was the same, same, same.
Therefore, while the doughnuts were pretty...these weren't passable.
(The only two exceptions: Chocolate peanut butter&jelly and the lemon poppyseed...those were "okay". And that's the truth of it.)
Now, I've heard from them since my visit and apparently the recipe has been reverted to what customers used to know...that said, I'm writing this as semi-unfinished so I revisit Donut Parlor and give their baked goods a second chance...
