  • One bad apple spoils the bunch At 10:00 this morning, right at opening, I was greeted with a smile by a nice young lady with a short bob. There was also a gentleman (that word is a stretch when you hear what happened next). I started browsing. In the corner of the store, was a clearance section with a plethora of various items. I started browsing some of the journals and scanning merchandise, moving things around so I could see everything. As I was doing so, the male employee with a long beard brusquely came over and with an exaggerated sigh, reached his arm in front of me and started tidying up DIRECTLY IN FRONT of me. I stepped back, trying to make eye contact, thinking he was looking for an item, waiting for an "excuse me" but he was making his rude point that I had somehow messed up his shelf. Stacking and slamming things around, I waited for an explanation. He had stepped directly in front of me, blocking my shopping and did not move for a minute and a half until he was done putting away items from the stack that I had planned on purchasing. Not one word was said to me while I waited. There was no mistake, he directly stepped in front of me, blocking my body and putting away my intended purchases, tidying after me, assuming I was going to leave things in disarray. They have deep clearance shelves, it was packed in. He then stepped into the stock room and slammed the door. I was and am appalled. I hadn't thrown the merchandise around and was going to put back the items ( that I wasn't going to purchase) when I was done. I had made a large stack to purchase. Obviously my patronage and presence that gives him a job was a nuisance. Eye on customer service means a job. This unskilled fellow belongs in the stock room, not blocking the CLEARANCE section that was probably the extent of meager skills. I walked to the front of the store and approached the nice young lady and told her what had happened. She profusely apologized and it was obvious she was embarrassed about his behavior. She said she had no idea why he did that and ultimately speechless. I told her I am not a child, I was going to clean up after myself, his blocking my shopping and slamming things around and sighing about my "mess" was very unprofessional. I did not purchase anything. I won't be returning as I was treated nasty and treated like a child in such a humiliating way. There are plenty of other places to find journals, stationery and other gift items in Charlotte that I can find beautiful things. I was going to treat myself as I have recently gotten over a serious illness and left the store feeling terrible. I had really wanted to purchase quite a few things. Not that it matters, but I am a 40-something Southpark area resident and very professionally dressed. Phillips Place is a high-end shopping area and if they expect to keep a brick and mortar store with an employee that has to be apologized for, they should watch their sales. Again, I am not a child but was treated as such. Their employees reflect the value of their company and products. Keep him on unpacking boxes in the dark stockroom, as I would never step in the store with his nasty lack of skills and demeanor present. I was ready to spend and left feeling humiliated. If the store manager happens to be this horrible man then they have made a terrible hiring decision, as I am not sure how he could have passed an interview unless the hiring manger was his family member.
