| - 3 STARS (1 Star for the Food, 2 Stars for the Ambiance)
My bf and I choose Canaletto as our last stop for a late lunch before heading back home to SF. The prices seemed decent considering it was in the Venetian, and the ambiance was beautiful. So, Canaletto it was.
Service was slow, but good thing the ambiance was amazing--views of St. Mark's Square! It gave you the feeling of eating outdoors although you were actually inside (i.e . paintings of bright blue skies). Also, there was free bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar you can enjoy while you waited for your meal. The bread was nice & warm and oil/vinegar paired well with it.
We ordered the Pizza Con Salsiccia and Pennoni Al Ragu:
*Pizza Con Salsiccia (Pizza with Spicy Sausage): Ehh, BAD! The crust was hard, and the base of the pie was chewy not crispy. It was extremely oily; there were oil wells throughout the pizza. The sausage was suppose to be spicy but it wasn't. And, the bell peppers was clearly out of the can (it was a faded green color and drenched in oil) and was inedible. So, needless to say, this combination made me feel nauseas afterwards.
*Pennoni Al Ragu: Essentially penne with meat sauce was just ok; nothing special. The penne was cooked al dente, just the way I like it. But, the meat sauce tasted like Prego and didn't have much depth of flavor to it. BTW, you have to ask for Parmesan cheese, they don't give it to you--weird!
The only saving grace for Canaletto is the location which is breathtaking.
Just to note, after eating, we passed by Postrio's and noticed the pricing was similar to Canaletto. Gosh darn it, we should have went there instead! Well, there's always next time...
