| - As a long time pet owner, this is the first time I have ever needed to involve a company to help train my pup. I have a 2 year old pit mix, who has absolutely no patience and has some very significant animal anxiety when other dogs start to whine. I choose to do the 3 week retreat. When we arrived, I had a 1 hour intake session where they ask you a list of questions, I was advised I would be returning 1 time per week so I can be integrated into the training and was asked to bring 3 weeks of food with me. After the 3 week retreat, we would be attending 3 follow-up 1 hr sessions with other dogs and their owners. Overall I am very impressed with Hunter Canine as a company and would absolutely recommend them.
My trainer was Justin and he was great, along with Chad the owner. Justin is extremely thorough in his explanations and directions. I did not go into the retreat thinking they would solve all my problems, but what impressed me the most is that when I asked for 'special' or 'extra' attention, I received it. After we left the retreat I didn't feel that the 'socialization' piece was completely resolved, because my dog never really got comfortable while she was at the retreat, so Hunter Canine never got to experience her true 'spunkiness'. When I raised this concern to Chad, he had no problem spending a little extra time with me to make sure I felt comfortable. Of course - the lesson we learned from this was - Most of it was my fault!!! My own anxiety levels were being transferred to my dog. We were able to do a little one on one and it really helped ease my concerns. I have opted to sign up for the CGC class next in order to continue the great training, which is the next step after the 3 week retreat. Classes don't start till April, but I can't wait.
Of course every experience can always come with some feedback and recommendations: I think there needs to be a little more one on one work with owner and dog during the retreat. I think a lot of my issues after the retreat came from me not understanding or knowing Hunter Canines program to the tee. I wasn't sure if I was correcting my dog the right way and I was nervous to correct hard or for the wrong thing. Essentially my nerves got the best of me, so a little more practice would have been great. Next, there are very little to no updates during the 3 weeks they are there. As an obsessive owner - I worried about my dog and thought about them 20 times a day (at least) and to not receive updates about the program and how they were doing, sucked. I did receive 1 picture the first day they got her into a kennel with another dog, but after that... nothing. Maybe a couple updates a couple times a week to let the owner know what part of the program they are working on that day and any 'issues' that were experienced over the last couple days. I want to be part of the process 100%, from start to finish. I still to this day don't really know much of what went on during those 3 weeks. They welcomed me to call anytime I felt the need to check in, but it made me feel like a bug-a-boo, so after the first couple days I just waited for my once a week appointments. Lastly, I heard a lot during the program 'well they did it for me while they were here' or 'they didn't do that while they were here' - those phrases are extremely frustrating to an owner who is struggling. Hunter Canine doesn't have a lot of the 'triggers' that set off some dogs. So the fact that for 3 weeks straight they didn't experience a 'trigger' and then to hear 'well they didn't do that while they were here'.... Is very disheartening. In my opinion it doesn't really matter if it happened while the dog was there or not, the fact is the dog has never been taught how to cope with that specific 'trigger', so it would only be reasonable to assume the owner would struggle with how to do that in the beginning. I just think how the message is delivered, needs a little work.
All in all, I am very impressed and can't wait for our next steps. Thank you Chad, Justin and Hunter Canine Team.
