| - It kills me to leave a 1-star review for a restaurant that I once called "the best sushi in Arizona". My father I have been coming to Kampai for over 15 years (ever since I was a little girl) and would usually eat here about every other month. The sushi was wonderful and fresh and the staff was friendly and always remembered us. The last time I ate at Kampai (before the change) was in April and the quality was as good as ever, we had our usual blonde spikey haired waitress who was always so sweet and helpful and we had a great time. We had no idea that it would be the last time we would enjoy our meals here
Then the owners changed.
I deeply miss the old owners, and feel they would be deeply disappointed at the state of the restaurant now. We just got back from dinner at Kampai and it was utterly horrible. The quality of the fish was astonishing sub-par and my beloved Tempura Udon was very watery and bland. The octopus, soy beans, tempura shrimp and vegetables, salmon, and yellowtail were all not very good and the Salmon Roe was shriveled and very small, and way too salty. You could tell that they were refilling the bottles of soy sauce was very cheap version that was (again!) salty and terrible. I don't know how a wonderful, traditional Japanese restaurant could sink so low, so fast. The menu was completely different (though they did have some old favorites) featuring orange chicken, egg rolls, and a variety of weird desserts that have never been on the menu before. They also seemed to be "out" of many things we tried to order: agedashi tofu, uni, white meat chicken etc. The bathrooms were filthy, and very weird country/soft rock was playing too loudly in the background. Ugh.
I'm very saddened to say we will never be returning to Kampai again. They say change is good but in this case it definitely wasn't. We'll miss you Kampai.
