  • Wow, where do I even start? Maybe with my five hour visit that left me looking the same when I left as when I arrived. Judging from the positive reviews, I gave Fate a chance after moving to North Scottsdale. I had gone to this salon a few times for simple haircuts and thought everything was fine. This experience, however, was horrible. As I am growing out my hair and only go in for trims, I decided to highlight my hair since I was bored with my current look. I made my appointment at 1 p.m. on a Saturday and briefly discussed the color I was looking for with the stylist (whose name I forget) and also let her know I dyed my hair a few weeks prior. My stylist's first attempt at highlights did not come out and she explained that this was due to the volume she used. She said she thought the volume would be OK, but since I currently had hair dye in my hair, it was not. She proceeded to highlight my hair again. Round 2 - Even though I was at Fate for almost 3 hours, at this point, I was still OK and patiently waited for the second round of highlights to finish. After washing my hair (for the third time), the stylist noticed only a few highlights came out, and one side of my head had not changed color at all. At this point it's 5:20 and I was going to an event as soon as I left the salon. The stylist spoke with another stylist who said she would need to lift my color first before adding additional color in, making the highlights a two step process. Previously, the stylist tried to highlight in one step. I will say that I have had my hair highlighted in the past and it has always been a two step process as I have black hair. However, I trusted the stylist, since well, she's THE STYLIST, and thought she knew what she was doing - especially since she told me she's been in the industry for 19 years! I ask the stylist to dye back the parts of my hair that actually changed as I did not have time to sit at the salon for another two hours while she attempted, yet again, to highlight my hair. The stylist colored the few sections that actually had changed color- this only took around 5 minutes. When I went to pay for my services, the owner/manager (not sure which) charged me $60 for the haircut, a reduced rate of $30 for the highlights, and $50 for the color correction. Naturally as my hair was exactly the same color, I expected to only pay for the haircut. I explained this to the manager/owner and she said that since I had dye in my hair, I had to pay for the color correction and a reduced rate for highlights. Excuse me? I had to do the correction since the stylist didn't highlight my hair the right way. I let her know that I told the stylist I had dye in my hair, but the manager/owner said that I needed to let her know, too. She then proceeded to say, "Look, it's been a long day for all of us and I don't want to fight." Oh, I'm sorry that it's been a long day for you. At YOUR job, which you are scheduled to be at. My ENTIRE DAY was taken from me, and I was not paid to be there. After going back and forth, the manager finally said she would take off the color correction, but I still had to pay for the reduced highlight price (which didn't turn out) and my haircut. Thankfully, the salon sent me an email on June 30 that I could get 50% off for 4 months. The manager tried not to take that, too, saying it was a summer special, but I pointed out the expiration date would be Oct. 30. Another thing I noticed - the entire time I was there - which was the entire day! - only two other clients came in. As I previously worked at a salon, I can say that Saturday appointments are a hot commodity - so that should tell you something right there.
