| - I just...wow. It isn't often that I get to enjoy a meal that leaves me content to the point that I don't have the words to describe the level of nirvana I've reached. But my long overdue first visit to Nola managed to do just that.
It admittedly took me way too long to finally eat at Nola's - when they opened I was a broke college student, when I graduated I was a broke graduate, and then for a while I honestly was more in the mood to try the many other new eateries we've seen in the last few years. But finally, they were open and I was craving something different. So a meal at Nola it was.
I came here with my family, and between the four of us we sampled a decent chunk of the menu as we traded a couple appetizers and meals between us. After that I'm pretty convinced you can't go wrong with anything here. I loved absolutely everything I tasted. Our appetizers set the perfect tone for the meal - the Catfish Croquettes simply couldn't contain any more meat or stuffing, while the Fried Green Tomatoes were the freshest and richest I've ever tasted. And my Gumbo Ya-Ya struck me as one of the most unique foods I've eaten, and was full of rice, chicken, and okra - yum!
Even better, after salivating over the appetizers the main courses continued to impress - we sampled the chicken and dumplings and Pork Tenderloin. The first dish contained dumplings that had to have been made fresh and by hand, they were so good - although they paled in comparison to the flavor of the tenderized chicken that came covered with butter and vegetables. But my favorite dish of the night had to be that Pork Tenderloin - the meat practically melted in my mouth, and every bite of marinated pork gave you an amazing explosion of flavor, especially when you piled your fork high with the vegetables and sauces served with it.
What I'm about to say is probably the understatement of the month - but Nola = YUM. And for the most part, the service was just as fantastic; while I wouldn't have minded a faster pace at the end of the meal as we waited for our checks and boxes, they did provide us with plenty of water and kept our tables clear of empty plates throughout the meal itself. It's probably fair to attribute the slight slowdown to the fact that Nola is just very popular and always busy. I'll admittedly have to remember to give myself plenty of time to enjoy a meal at Nola in the future, just in case, so that I'm not late to my post-dinner plans - but it'll be extra time well spent as far as I'm concerned!
