Awesome hike! The scenery is magnificent and varied on the way up, and the view from the top is definitely worth it. There's a surprising amount of wildlife- I saw three snakes, several Chuckwallas (giant lizards), and a gila monster, not to mention dozens of other birds and reptiles.
Watch our for rattlesnakes! I was surprised that there weren't any warnings at the trailhead- they seem to be very common, and I ran into two of them on the way up. They like to hide underneath and behind boulders, which make them hard to spot until you're right on top of them. Nothing like the sound of that rattle to keep you moving :)
The Echo Canyon trail takes about 2 hours round trip moving at a cautious pace. It's very steep second-class terrain- use a camelback so you can keep your hands free for scrambling (maybe that's the namesake?) Be sure to bring sunscreen and water, although you can find shade pretty frequently below the peak. I hear the Cholla trail is much more exposed.
