  • Alchemy is a modest hole-in-the-wall, located a couple miles east of downtown Madison. They serve American favorites, including wings, burgers, and sandwiches, in a bar-like setting. I had their bison burger with sweet potato fries and I was impressed by the quality of my meal. The fries were like thick potato chips, served with two delicious sauces. The burger was cooked perfectly, and the bun and toppings were fresh. Their bar list is really distinctive - with unusual varieties (such as New Glarus cherry stout) from various local breweries. Don't miss their desserts: I tried a cherry chocolate pie and pumpkin cheesecake, both of which tasted homemade. It's true that they don't accept credit cards and that the place is a bit dirty and run down, but I highly recommend Alchemy if you bring an open mind and the right expectations.
