| - Hi, on my first day exploring Madison, I noticed this small (yes a tad bit like a hole in the wall) but charming Nepali restaurant. It was late afternoon (sun coming down) and like any foodie would know, if a place is packed and busy with tables full and people standing with no room, it's probably a good place to eat! I strolled inside and looked over everyone's plates and my first thoughts were "gosh these plates are small", similar to a lot of the posters on yelp. I took a look at the menu to see what was on there and yes, I to concur - sticker shock!! Anyhow, even after reading the yelp reviews, I decided to give it a try anyways because it looked delicious! Yes, and I am so glad I did! I ordered takeout.
I got the Momos (half veg, half non-veg). I am used to lighter dumplings and these were on the chunkier side but good. The sauce that comes with it is ok and the hot sauce I asked for is spicy(!) and dry but tasty!
I got the Katahar Kebab, the green jackfruit dish and it is delicious. I don't know what they did to the jackfruit but definitely good things. The vegetable sauce is tasty.
Lastly, the dal was the best - definitely one of the best I've had! They put a couple or so different beans in there and it's soo good. Warm and comforting! I did a taste test of everything first when I started and the dal, I ate it up all in the beginning. Sooo soo good. Just the comfort food I needed. :-)
I also got the special himal chuli coffee and the sweet lady behind the register made it when I got there to pick up my food. It was the perfect touch to end a great meal.
I would definitely recommend Himal Chuli. It may seem like a splurge considering the decor but actually a $9 appetizer and $16 entree with soup isn't much different than what I would pay at a thai, chinese, italian or american restaurant.
