| - I'm from California. So I have taco standards. And typically, when I'm outside of Cali I don't even bother trying tacos because I'm usually disappointed. But I've been living in Montreal for a while now and I miss that homey, nostalgic feeling of tacos, and I heard about this taco spot not too far from our place, so why not.
First of all, it's more of a sit-down, service by a waiter/waitress kind of place, which already is a little different than what I'm used to (see: taco trucks). Nonetheless, the decor was charming and the place was clean. The menu isn't too overwhelming and the selections are interesting. One thing to note if you get the tacos: they are $3 each (a couple of them are $4 each) and you have to order a minimum of four (which means you're spending at least $12). Anyways, my partner had the al pastor, the pescado, the rajas con queso, and the mole rojo. I had the al pastor, the pescado, the tinga de pollo, and the de cochinita pibil. The tacos were tasty enough, presented on a nice plate with a little carrot and onion salad with mango dressing on the side. Not bad. Actually the mole rojo tacos were impressive, as well as the al pastor and conchinita pibil.
HOWEVER... a couple gripes. 1) If you're going to do small tacos piled with ingredients, two tortillas are essential. It keeps the taco from falling apart and it balances the flavor with some starch. 2) Rice in a taco is a no-no. It's basically filler, adds this weird texture, and is kind of cheating.
I think smaller tacos like the ones that Taco Bar serves are probably not for the sit-down crowd. Maybe if they served their tacos out of a truck then they wouldn't have to cut the aforementioned corners.
All that to say... I might come back here again, but it wouldn't go out of my way.
